Jubilee Park Center

The Mission of Jubilee is to be a catalyst for community renewal and enrichment to the surrounding South Dallas/Fair Park neighborhood, with special emphasis on comprehensive community revitalization and the education of children and adults.

The Jubilee Center was founded in 1997 as part of an effort to initiate revitalization in the South Dallas/Fair Park area.  Since its inception, the summer programs have served over 1,000 children.

Studies show that American children are becoming more overweight due to poor eating habits and decreased physical activity.  Jubilee summer program sports activities ensure that children are involved in daily physical activities.  The Jubilee Center initiated the Healthy Children, Stronger Community program, which was designed to increase the level of physical activity of and healthy choices made by kids in the community.  As part of the development and ongoing evaluation of the program, the Center for Community Health administers a baseline survey for each group of children who enter the program. Survey items are designed to evaluate food frequencies, health knowledge, and levels of physical activity.  Baseline surveys will be compared to future follow-up surveys to measure changes in food frequencies, health knowledge, and levels of physical activity.

 Mental Health Transformation

PROJECT TRANSFORM

The Texas Health Institute funded six projects in Texas for local mental health transformation initiatives, guided by the progressive 2003 report of the President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health.  Although our project is termed the Dallas County Unified Public Mental Health Initiative, the project actually encompasses all seven counties in the NorthSTAR area.

As part of the project objectives, the Center for Community Health and the J. McDonald Williams Institute will conduct an ongoing mental health needs analysis to inform the mental health transformation. As part of this analysis, we developed the Epidemiologic Profile, and are currently managing data collection, and will design the needs assessment instrument, achieving the analysis through broad stakeholder involvement.
